On Rua Direita, in the heart of downtown Coimbra, there is a space where one of Portugal’s most iconic classics is given a more contemporary twist. Pregos & Co brings together Portuguese steak sandwiches, cocktails, and a relaxed atmosphere in a concept that blends international influences with local products and familiar flavours.
The space was created by Gabriela and Christopher, a couple whose experiences in Switzerland, Italy, and New York inspired them to bring to Coimbra a combination of casual dining, cocktails, and an atmosphere influenced by the urban bars and speakeasies they discovered over the years.
With family ties to the city, the founders saw potential in the transformation Coimbra’s downtown area has been experiencing, especially on Rua Direita, a street they believe has room for fresh concepts and new energy.
During the day, the atmosphere is calm and relaxed. By late afternoon and into the evening, cocktails take centre stage and the space adopts a more social atmosphere, designed for gatherings with friends and long conversations.
The concept blends Portuguese identity with international influences. At its core is the traditional prego no pão (the classic Portuguese steak sandwich), reinterpreted through less conventional ingredients and combinations. The sandwiches are prepared with beef loin and national and regional ingredients. Among the most popular options are the Raclette Prego, inspired by the space’s connection to Switzerland, and the Pesto Prego, offering a fresher and more contemporary take.
But Pregos & Co is not just about the food. Cocktails play a central role in the experience, reflecting the influence of cocktail bar culture in an approach still relatively uncommon in Coimbra. Between classics, seasonal cocktails, and happy hours, the space also aims to establish itself as a relaxed evening meeting spot.
More than reinventing the traditional prego, Pregos & Co focuses on a simple combination: good food, well-crafted cocktails, and a relaxed atmosphere in the city centre. A place where Portuguese tradition, international influences, and urban life come together around the table.
