Coimbra is one of the most beautiful cities in all of Europe, if not the world. At least this is the opinion of those who live, but also those who visit the city. It may be small and simple, but has unforgettable points of interest and traditions. So this month we decided to talk to a new service that shows Coimbra to those who visit it in a different way: GO!walks.
This program promises to help even more tourists to visit the city now that an important part of its historical center – which comprises the ancient University and Sofia’s area – was recently considered World Heritage by UNESCO. Prepare yourself to see Coimbra as you have never seen it, through the eyes of those who know it better than anyone!
Are you coming to Coimbra and still doesn’t know how to visit the entire city without missing a beat? You have to look for GO!walks’ help! The initiative was created by Sara Cruz, who studied Tourism, Recreation and Heritage at the University of Coimbra, a course with the seal of UNESCO that gave her the idea to change the way visitors can discover Coimbra.
“The initiative began in June of 2012 and since then we have been working every day. We work with just one person or groups, providing several visits to monuments, museums and other places of interest in the city of Coimbra. We have served 40 different nationalities and all people seem to want to visit the historical center, including the University of Coimbra, the main (and sometimes only) reason for their visit to the city”, says Sara Cruz.
GO!walks provides fixed routes, but also personalized tours according to the goals of each client. “First, we talk with the client to understand his personality and tastes and then adapt the script to agree with his specificities”, explains the promoter. The visits are guided and reported in Portuguese, English, Spanish or French, with prices between €12.50 and €40.
According to Sara Cruz, GO!walks’ customers “have the advantage of enjoying discounts at various locations such as the University of Coimbra, the Mosteiro of Santa Clara-a-Velha and also restaurants or local craft shops”. Since its beginning, GO!walks “came to change how guests discover the city. It’s totally different when a person understands what it’s being seen”, she adds.
