The “Casa da Cidadania da Língua” (“House of the citizenship of the language”, previously known as “House of the arch”), located in the old Uptown of Coimbra, more precisely at number 8 on “Rua Douror João Jacinto”, is a “space for reflection and action for the construction of a more promising future for Portugal, Brazil and other Portuguese-speaking countries”.
Thus, the “Casa da Cidadania da Língua” was created with the aim of promoting and strengthening ties between Portuguese-speaking countries through the exchange of ideas, knowledge and experiences with a view to building a “new social global architecture” where democracy, cultural diversity, equality and social justice are valued.
A space for associations, publishers, governments, journalists, intellectuals and artists where the Portuguese language is presented not as an instrument but as a platform.
It’s worth remembering that the “Casa da Cidadania da Língua” was the former “Casa da Escrita” (House of writing) in Coimbra. It was there that, in the middle of the 20th century, gatherings, debates and meetings took place between intellectuals, thinkers and illustrious artists who “contributed to transforming the muzzled society of that time”.
