A great suggestion for an autumn walk.
“Parque de Santa Cruz” or the “Parque da Sereia“, as it is popularly known, is located on the famous “Praça da República“.
Formerly a place of gathering and meditation of the monks of Santa Cruz, this garden was built in the 1700’s and is atill today one of the most beautiful green and leisure spaces in the city of Coimbra.
Entering through a Triumphal Arch we see three statues representing Faith, Charity and Hope – the three virtues that the Church considers indispensable for the salvation of man. Climbing the stairs, we find the Fountain of Nogueira with a statue of a merman opening his mouth to a fish, from which the water flows to the fountain with the figure of a mermaid and explains the popular designation “garden of the mermaid”.
In addition to the different tree species brought from all over the world, there are some spaces that define the garden such as the waterfall, the staircase and the large circular lake. Furthermore it now houses a tea house, for a relaxing drink or light meal.
“Jardim da Sereia“, a garden to visit and travel in time while visiting Coimbra.
