Joana was born in Ponte de Sôr, Portalegre, on the South, but came to Coimbra to study and fell in love. Not only for the city but also for her husband, who came from Minho, on the North. They built a family here and when their children arrived, Joana chose to leave the job she had at the time, in her area of Biochemistry training, to stay with her family.
Used to doing manual work since she was little, Joana fell in love with the “Amigurumi” technique, a Japanese technique for creating small crochet or knitting dolls. She began to explore other craft projects, gaining a taste for this universe and, consequently, grew in her a desire to open a store, to the public, to showcase her work and those of other Portuguese brands.
Thus, in September 2022, “Loja do Pátio” was born. Initially she started by opening in the old stables, at the end of “Rua Fernandes Tomás”, but at the beginning of this year, when the opportunity arose, she “moved up” to number 63 on the picturesque “Rua do Quebra Costas”. It is there that Joana, every day, opens the doors of a store that captivates at first glance with the beautiful pieces on display. In addition to the Amigurumi dolls, Joana also makes embroidery and macramé pieces. Also, she exhibits and sells items from Portuguese artists and brands, such as the colorful illustrations by Teresa Rego, the delicate illustrations by Marta Nunes, ceramic pieces from brands such as “o Cactuu”, “Ó das Bagas” and ” Pássaro de Seda”, the cotton blankets from the brand “Pardo” and the walnut pieces from João Graça. At “Loja do Pátio” you will also find an exclusive collection by the artist Francisca Vale Modesto: dolls, made with modeling clay and fabrics, inspired in legends and figures from Coimbra such as Queen Santa Isabel or D. Inês de Castro.
