SOMM Wine Atelier was born from the serendipitous meeting of two friends, born in Coimbra, united by shared ambitions and passions. Gonçalo Bragança, with a degree in Hotel Management and working as a bartender and sommelier for ten years, and Afonso Carvalho, chef and Master in Gastronomic Innovation, have always wanted to invest in the city where they were born.
When number 112 of the “Ferreira Borges” street became available, they didn’t hesitate and saw the opportunity they were waiting for to implement the concept they envisioned, which aims to deconstruct wine and the themes related to its consumption. To the two friends, and now partners, both working outside of Coimbra, are joined by Joaquim Cabral, the Sommelier who you’ll meet and find at SOMM.
This small and modern Wine Atelier, divided over two floors, includes a wine cellar with more than 200 bottles and 150 wine references and offers two distinct tasting experiences: the “À Portuguesa” tasting, featuring four selections showcasing the diversity of Portugal from north to south; and the “Generosos de Portugal” tasting, highlighting Portugal’s renowned fortified wines, including Port, Madeira, and Moscatel. While the tastings take place, the Wines are presented in a simple and fun way, providing a journey “from the north to the south of the country”, without leaving Coimbra. If you prefer, you can choose to drink just one glass of wine, or several, accompanied by some of the snacks that vary every month, including: cheese and sausage boards, veal tartar, veal carpaccio, sardines in olive oil, squid with ink and mackerel fillets with lemon.
SOMM is a young and uncomplicated Wine Bar, without rules or formalism, which promises to be “something more”.
