Visiting Coimbra is always a good idea!
Not only because this is a welcoming town where you will find tradition, comfort and safety but also because Coimbra is located in a privileged area where you can find everything you might want on a vacation: culture, mountains, beach, sea, river and gastronomy.
Let’s start with the mountain. In Serra da Lousã you will find four of the most beautiful Shale Villages in Portugal: Casal de São Simão, Gondramaz, Cerdeira and Talasnal.
It only takes between 30 to 50 minutes by car to reach any of these picturesque villages. There, the silence, the calm, the tranquility that we crave abounds. The trails invite you to stroll while enjoying landscapes of unique beauty. Here you’ll fell in a different world.
From the mountains to the beach: half an hour from Coimbra, is the beautiful fishing town of “Figueira da Foz”.
The so-called “Copacabana Portuguesa” enchants for its extensive sand and boardwalk that invites long strolls while enjoying an ice cream. Also known for its gastronomic festivals, you cannot “Figueira” without having a fresh Grilled Fish for lunch or dinner. On the way, through the rice fields of the Mondego, Montemor-o-Velho castle stands tall and still strong with great views.
We mention “Figueira da Foz” beach, but we could also talk about ”Praia da Tocha”, known for the famous wooden fisherman houses “Palheiros da Tocha” or “Praia de Mira” distinguished with the Blue Flag for over 30 years.
From beach to the river: you cannot fail to include the Fluvial Beach “Torres do Mondego”, 15 km from Coimbra.
A beach that stands out for its infrastructure, activities and good environmental practices. A Blue Flag Beach at the start of the mountainous area. The Mondego River is always present on this region and there is nothing like feeling it to enjoy this natural beauty.
And what definitely can’t you miss on vacation ?! Good food!
It is impossible to talk about Coimbra without mentioning the famous gastronomy of the region, with influences from the coast, the rice fields, the river and the mountain: our delicious suckling pig “Leitão à Bairrada”, one of the seven wonders of portuguese gastronomy, the traditional goat “Chanfana”, the “Lamprey rice” or the “Cabrito”, and of course, without forgetting the desserts of conventual tradition, the “Pastéis from Tentugal”, “the “Pastéis de Santa Clara” or the “Arrufada”.
