Coimbra is not only an amazing city at its core. If you venture out of town, you will find out that there are very interesting places like Figueira da Foz, a beautiful fishing town with a long story to tell and a great culinary
tradition.
It is in the historical Figueira da Foz, inhabited since the Neolithic era (according to various historical records), that the river Mondego flows into the sea. It’s also where you can find one of the largest beaches in Europe, known as the “Portuguese Copacabana”, excellent beaches and some of the Country’s best food festivals.
In June, for instance, the city will host the Sardine and Mackerel Festival, which takes place between the 7th and 30th of this month. Grilled sardines being one of the most typical Portuguese dishes, there is nothing like taking a day to visit Figueira da Foz and find out more about its beaches and food.
