The majority of the Cantanhede council is part of what is known as the Bairrada Region (located between the urban centers of Águeda and Coimbra, along a 40km, north-south route) famous for its wine production and for the delicious “Leitão Assado à Bairrada” (roasted suckling pig).
Wine production in that region dates back to Roman times, and later, the first King of Portugal D. Afonso Henriques authorized the planting of vines there. It is its privileged location and the climate that makes Bairrada an area of excellence wines, recognized nationally and internationally, with emphasis on the production of red and sparkling wines.
So it’s not “surprising” that the council of Cantanhede has in vitiviniculture its activity with the most expression and visibility. The production of Catanhede Winery (“Adega de Cantanhede”), which focuses on the production of high quality wines with innovative approaches, accounts for around 40% of the region’s total production, making it the largest producer in Bairrada. With the possibility of a visit, the route passes through the entire cellar and sparkling wine cellars where you can observe all stages of the winemaking process of wines and sparkling wines Bairrada D.O.C.
