Fiori | A New Creative Space in Downtown Coimbra

What if you could spend an afternoon in downtown Coimbra painting pottery, creating a decorative piece or simply discovering a new hobby? That’s exactly what Fiori has to offer. This new creative studio has opened its doors in Praça do Comércio, bringing together workshops, arts and crafts gatherings, and a concept store featuring creations by independent artists and brands.

Behind the project is Maria, whose passion for arts and crafts first took shape in her spare time, when she began creating hand-embroidered pieces such as tote bags and traditional academic ribbons. Flowers, which often inspired her earliest illustrations and embroidery, eventually gave the project its name. Fiori means “flowers” in Italian, a nod to the botanical world that has inspired her work from the very beginning.

Maria had long dreamed of having a space of her own. Before taking that step, however, she began organising Creative Gatherings (Encontros Criativos) in collaboration with different venues across the city. The idea was to create opportunities for people to step away from their screens, try something new and meet others. The warm response and enthusiasm of those who attended gave her the confidence to take the next step and open a space of her own.

The choice of Praça do Comércio, in the heart of downtown Coimbra, has a particularly special story behind it. It was in the very building where Fiori now stands that Maria’s grandparents once ran a haberdashery shop. Having grown up exploring the streets of the city centre, Maria returned years later to the same building to bring her own project to life. There is something particularly meaningful about this return to her roots: where her grandparents once sold sewing and craft supplies, their granddaughter is now carrying on that connection, creating a space where those same materials can take on new forms and become part of new stories.

At Fiori, no previous artistic experience is needed to take part. The gatherings are designed for anyone who wants to try something different, learn a new technique or simply spend a few hours in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. With all the necessary materials and guidance provided, participants are encouraged to explore their creativity at their own pace, without worrying about achieving a perfect result.

The programme will be announced monthly and will include Creative Gatherings led by Maria, alongside workshops led by guest artists for the first time. November’s activities will range from candle painting and ceramics to embroidery on photographs, crochet and making felt Christmas decorations. On Wednesdays, the Open Studio (Atelier Aberto) will offer visitors the chance to paint ceramic pieces or try their hand at modelling with air-dry clay. There will also be monthly gatherings such as the Junk Journal Club, dedicated to exploring papers, cut-outs, collages and small keepsakes, where participants can share ideas and create together.

Alongside the workshops, Fiori has a concept store showcasing pieces from more than 20 independent artists and brands. From illustrations and ceramics to earrings, necklaces, tote bags, crochet creations, hats and T-shirts, visitors can discover original pieces, each with its own distinctive style and character.

The space aims to welcome both those who live and work in Coimbra and those visiting the city. For travellers, Fiori offers an opportunity to discover the work of independent makers and enjoy a different kind of experience during their stay, exploring a more creative side of downtown Coimbra.

With the arrival of Fiori, Praça do Comércio welcomes a new space that aims to bring more colour, originality and energy to downtown Coimbra. A place designed to spark curiosity, bring people together and create happy memories, encouraging locals and visitors alike to return to the historic centre and discover new ways to experience this part of the city.
