In the heart of Coimbra’s historic downtown, the aroma of coffee is once again taking center stage with the opening of the new NAU Coffee space. After establishing itself on Rua Borges Carneiro, the project created by Francisco Madeira is taking another step forward, while keeping the same philosophy: serving specialty coffee with time, care, and purpose.

NAU’s story begins far from Coimbra. It was in Germany that Francisco, then an emigrant with a degree in Tourism, first stepped, almost by chance, into the world of coffee. What began as a temporary job soon turned into a true passion. There, he discovered the world of specialty coffee, learned techniques and processes, and understood the importance of respecting the origin of each bean. Returning to Portugal, he brought with him a dream: to create in Coimbra a place where coffee is genuinely appreciated, not just “drunk” in passing.

The new NAU now opens at number 24 on Rua Visconde da Luz, as a natural continuation of that journey. Bright, modern and welcoming, the space invites people to step inside, slow down, and stay awhile. More intimate and urban in character, this new location is designed with a strong focus on coffee itself, paying special attention to those passing through the Baixa who seek quality, even in a to-go format. At the counter, the star remains the SCA-certified specialty coffee, meeting strict standards of quality, sustainability, and traceability. Balanced espressos, creamy lattes, and seasonal drinks remind us that here, every cup is meant to be enjoyed slowly.

The new NAU Coffee strengthens the presence of a concept that has already won many fans in Coimbra: a café that values origin, respects the product, and places the customer at the heart of the experience.
