Paul de Arzila – Natural Reserve

A beautiful landscape.

Eleven kilometers west of Coimbra is the “Reserva Natural do Paul de Arzila”, on the left bank of the Mondego River. This is a humid zone with an enormous biological diversity. Humid zones are among the most threatened ecosystems, and therefore, “Paul de Arzila” has several national and international protection statutes. What makes this Paul so rich is the constant presence of water and the various springs. Therefore, there is a great floristic wealth, with more than 300 species of plants and a huge diversity of animals, some of them almost in extinction. Studies since 1977 have identified 207 invertebrate species, 152 bird species, 8 amphibian species, 11 reptile species, 14 fish species and 24 mammal species. Between Spring and Summer you can see the flight of the “Garça Vermelha” on the balcony of the Paul Interpretation Center. “Paul de Arzila´s” rich fauna and flora surely deserve your visit. You can visit the Interpretation Center and then make a 2km route that will allow you to get in touch with the environment. Keep in mind that this is in a protected location and it is very important not to disturb the tranquillity of this place.
