Safra, , the “harvest of the season” that will conquer you

Safra is the new restaurant in downtown Coimbra that tells us the story of Sérgio, its Chef and Owner. His parents have been Bakery Chefs for 40 years, so Sérgio knows well the reality of those who work in the sector and for this reason he tried to escape it. He attended a Business Communication course, but quickly realized that it was not worth going against destiny, and finally  he took the Chef course. The pandemic came and changed his plans, with the closure of the sector. Sérgio reinvented himself and started selling pre-made meals. Additionally, he offered a “personalized chef” service and went to customer’s houses to cook.

But his dream was always to open his own restaurant. And it was in August 2023, with the unconditional support of his wife, Vanessa, that his dream finally came true, when they opened “Safra“, number 44 on “Rua da Moeda”. They explain that the downtown “chose them”, they felt in love with the architectural richness of the space where Safra is now. There they dedicated countless hours, with the help of their friends, to remodeling the space, but without changing its character. The walls? They were the ones who painted it. The Tiles? Were placed by them.

With 24 seats, Safra invites us to share the dishes that shine on the menu each day. As the name suggests, Safra, the “harvest of the season” is the secret of this restaurant. All dishes are made with fresh, seasonal products, bought on the day from local producers and/or at the Coimbra Municipal Market. Then, magic is done and every day there is something new on the Menu. It’s about exploring, knowing that you’ll want to come back, again and again, because of the unique, creative and tasty way that the dishes are presented.

We can pick on your curiosity by revealing that “Bacalhau à Brás” do Safra and “Croissant with tartar” have won over many palates. “Lapas”, when there are, come directly from the Azores. It’s clear that the path chosen was not the easiest, but rather one of excellence and quality, characteristics that require work, but result in masterpieces, in this case, “at the table”. The Cheese Tart and the Chocolate Mousse are the desserts that end, with flavor and tradition, your gastronomic experience at Safra.
