The initiative was created to raise awareness of social isolation among older people, bringing together residents, shopkeepers and volunteers to create and install blankets, doilies, tablecloths and other handcrafted pieces that, together, have given this street its own distinctive identity.
What began as a project developed by Social Work students quickly grew into a tradition of Rua Fernandes Tomás itself. Today, the initiative remains in the hands of local shopkeepers and the community, who come together each year to install the colourful crochet displays that continue to surprise everyone who passes by.
More than an art installation, Crochet Social has become a symbol of community. Many of the pieces were handmade by older residents over the years, others have been donated, and some return every year, carrying with them stories, memories and deep sentimental value. Each piece is a reminder that traditional craftsmanship can also bring generations together, preserve memories and help combat social isolation.
