Inaugurated in 2008, “Cerca de São Bernardo” Theatre is located in the Historic Center of the City of Coimbra and its construction was part of the requalification of the “Pátio da Inquisição” (Inquisition Square)/ “Cerca de São Bernardo” area. This theatre is one of the main entities promoting the cultural dynamization of downtown of the city through its rich and varied cultural offering.
Defining itself as an “unconventional” space, its facilities resemble those of a warehouse, easy to adapt to the specific characteristics of each show it hosts.
The resident company, “A Escola da Noite” (The Night School), with three decades of history, is responsible for managing and programming the shows. It offers shows/theater performances of the most diverse styles, but also welcomes external artists, particularly in the area of theater and contemporary dance, with the objective of bringing the city closer to culture.
The program “Saturdays for childhood”, for example, offers diverse artistic proposals every Saturday for the youngest and for families in the city, including theater, dance, painting, illustration, cinema, literature, among others.
