Coimbra & art: a love affair with a happy ending

Coimbra equals art and culture. The link between the city and the artistic world has been a constant over the centuries, given that Coimbra has been the home and even the muse of important writers, musicians and painters, among other artists. So this month we decided to talk about the Festival of Arts of Coimbra. The event is happening for the seventh year in a row, gradually drawing a growing number of fans over the years. Read our monthly report and find out more about the event.

The city’s seventh Festival of Arts happens in July.

If you’re visiting Coimbra in July and you’re looking to experience something different, then your search has come to an end. Coimbra’s Festival of Arts, organized by the Inês de Castro Foundation, runs between 16th and 28th July and has a lot to offer from concerts to exhibitions, as well as cinema and dance.

It is, therefore, an eclectic festival that gives voice to different forms of artistic expression from various parts of the world. Now in its seventh year, the festival’s activities will take place preferably in the stunning outdoor amphitheater of the Quinta das Lágrimas, but other locations across the city will also host some of the events.

The program kicks off on the 16th with cinema and a masterpiece named “The Dead”, a film directed by John Houston. The last activity that wraps up the festival on the 28th is the dance show “Fica no singelo”, directed by Clara Andermatt. But let’s not forget the music concert of Mario Laginha and Catarina Wallenstein and the art exhibition of Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, which will be drawing crowds between 17th and 27th July at the Museu Nacional Machado de Castro.

Here’s the program:
