Flavor and tradition in the historical center of Coimbra.
There are several long-lived restaurants in the historical center of Coimbra. Having won the demanding hearts and palates of locals, they are sure to score highly with visitors too.
And it’s in the Alta that we begin this small gastronomic route: it’s in the heart of the “Sé Velha” (Old Cathedral square) that we find “O Trovador”, since 1987. A mandatory stop for all those who appreciate the excellence of Traditional Portuguese Cuisine: “Polvo à Lagareiro” octopus, “Bacalhau à Brás” cod, “Chanfana” goat and even suckling pig. On Fridays, dinners have even more charm with a live “Fado Coimbra” show. Contact: 239 825 475
At the “Adega Paço do Conde” Restaurant, easy to find on “Paço do Conde” Street since 1930, the specialty is grilled fish or meat. The alternatives we recommend are “Chanfana” and Veal Stew. To finish the meal, a typical Portuguese sweet, “Leite Creme”. With the capacity to receive large groups, it’s a space for locals, tourists and, of course, many students. Contact: 917 148 341
Just like the Restaurant “A Cova Funda – O Espanhol”, in “Beco do Fanado”. A family restaurant where, since opening in 1947, “Bacalhau com Grão” (Cod with Grain) has been served every day. The Bean Rice that accompanies the “Picanha” meat, the Mixed Grill or the Black Pork are also very popular. Contact: 239 825 195
In “Terreiro da Erva”, we find the popular “Cantinho dos Reis” for almost 30 years, which owes its name to its owner, Mr. Reis, one of the most charismatic figures in the downtown. Chanfana is the traditional dish we suggest, but it’s the Mixed Grill and Mr. Reis who make students choose this restaurant as one of their favorites for group dinners. Contact: 239 824 116
Since 1981 the Giro Restaurant has been on “Rua das Azeiteiras”. Known for its “Sopa do Mar”, “Chanfana Assada à Bairrada” and the homemade desserts such as “Pudim à Giro” and “Toucinho do Céu”, it is another well regarded restaurant. Contact: 239 833 020
More recently, “Petisqueira Portuguesa“. In addition to the snacks, as the name implies, the “Açordas”, the various Codfish Dishes and the Steaks make the Petisqueira Menu. They also regularly showcase live Fado shows, sung by Students of University. Contact: 919 786 812
