Bruce and his wife, Julia (Corean western names), left South Korea for Portugal because they wanted to give a better education to their three children. This is how the typical flavors and dishes of South Korea arrived and conquered Coimbra Downtown: the couple opened, one year ago, in “Praça do Comércio” Square, “Seoul Chicken”. A typically South Korean “street food” restaurant: it’s Julia who creates all the dishes on the menu. It’s impossible not to try the Fried Chicken, the spicy options are the most appreciated: Yangneum Chicken and Maeum Yangneum Chicken. From the Korean Snacks, we suggest Tteokbokki (Rice cake soaked with spicy sauce and fried vegetables) as it is an “everyday” dish in South Korea and Bibimguksu (Cold and spicy noodles with vegetables and boiled egg). Soju is the Korean alcoholic beverage that should accompany your meal: there are many flavors to choose. The space is small and although the terrace is generous, it’s always advisable to book because Seoul Chicken has already conquered many palates.
And that’s exactly why the couple is investing in “Praça do Comércio” again. Right across from Seoul, the Gangnam Barbecue opens this August (the 8th), offering another typically South Korean dining experience: the Korean barbecue. It is the customers themselves who will prepare the meat, fish and even vegetables on the grill at the table.
Taro, another South Korean, recently opened “Tokki” on Rua Visconde da Luz. Here, the stars of the menu are Korean Toasts, especially Bulgogi (with grilled beef and Korean-style sweet sauce) and Topokki (the same stuffing as the first one but less spicy) and the typical noodles. The diversity of gastronomic concepts continues to grow in “Baixa de Coimbra” and the city is grateful.
