April is a sweet month in Coimbra! Not only because we‘re celebrating Easter and eating the typical Easter cakes and almonds, but also because the city is once again hosting the event “O Património Doceiro de Coimbra” (The Sweet Heritage of Coimbra).
The event was created in 2014 to promote the region’s traditional sweets and pastries and it was a success among locals and tourists. That’s why the organization is repeating the recipe in 2015. And, believe in us, this initiative will be equally delicious this year! This is an opportunity not to be missed, so read our monthly review to find out more about this sweet event.
What happens when you mix heritage, culture and traditional pastries?
If you have a sweet tooth, then Coimbra is the perfect destination for you in April. The city receives the second edition of “Os Caminhos da Baixa – O Património Doceiro de Coimbra” that not only aims to promote the culinary tradition of the region, but also the historical city center, which was classified as a UNES CO Heritage Site in 2013.
April – the month of Easter and almonds – was already delicious enough, but this new initiative makes it even sweeter.
This trip across the city’s culinary heritage will show you eight amazing bakeries located in the city’s downtown and Santa Clara, each with their specialty: the Moinho Velho and its cavaca, Penta and its arrufada, Café Santa Cruz and its crúzios, Café Nicola with the “barriga de freira”, A Brasileira and its manjar branco, the Pastelaria Briosa and its Santa Clara pastries, the Santa Clara monastery and its clarissinha, finishing the route at Vasco da Gama where you can taste the famous queijada of Coimbra.
These sweet paths can be enjoyed throughoutthe month of April. The goal is to get everyone to visit the city’s downtown and Santa Clara, stopping along the way to try the best pastries in town at a more affordable price.
The icing on the cake is the event scheduled to happen on April 20th, when the city celebrates a special date: Tourist Day. On this day, Coimbra’s Tourism Office will organize a tasting of traditional sweets that will allow visitors to try the best traditional pastries before buying them.
