The long-standing Onion Fair is an event that brings Coimbra to life every year for a week in August. The fair gathers sellers of onions and other typical products, creating a festive atmosphere that attracts both locals and tourists.
The fair is a revival of the old Saint Bartholomew Fair, which has existed for several centuries, and it keeps the region’s popular traditions alive. Since 1986, the folk group Os Camponeses de Vila Nova has performed the verse that inspired the event:
“On August 24
It’s St. Bartholomew
Girl, run away from your father
For I too ran away from mine”
Although onions are the main attraction, there are many other reasons to visit this renowned event in Coimbra, including traditional gastronomy and folklore.
Alongside the onions, visitors can enjoy stalls with crafts and local products, music, and plenty of lively entertainment for everyone!
