“Coimbra is under construction”, we can say. A new mobility is being built, the Mondego Metro System (Metrobus), which involves some constraints and delays associated with the works which, in turn, require some patience from people who circulate around the city everyday.
But what can we expect and what will change with the Metrobus? Metrobus is a public transport system for passengers in road mode, entirely electric, which will operate in three municipalities, Coimbra, Miranda do Corvo and Lousã, uniting and bringing them closer.
This is just one of the positive changes that Metrobus promises. But let’s talk about other: we will have an efficient transport system, with reduced journey times, on its own road, facilitating passenger movement and mobility; greater comfort in the 35 electric, air-conditioned and silent vehicles; greater safety through advanced technology and the good materials used in vehicles. Metrobus is an innovative and sustainable solution that contributes to improving accessibility and economic and social development. With three lines and a total of 42 stations, we have no doubt that this new form of mobility will attract and reinforce the use of public transportation, facilitating the movement of people who live here and all those who visit the city.
According to the latest information provided by the Municipality of Coimbra, “the start of operation of the system between “Serpins” (“Lousã”) and “Largo da Portagem” (Coimbra) will be in the second half of 2024 and the remaining sections (urban operation in Coimbra) should begin working until the end of 2025.”
On the website www.metromondego.pt we can follow the works of “Metro Mondego” and stay updated on the constraints that the city is suffering. In the end, it will be well worth it.
